Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular neoplasm in children. Glial tumor of the retina and optic nerve head are considered to be congenital and are therefore classified as hamartomas. Concurrent occurrence of these tumors in one eye is uncommon and by reviewing the studies, a few cases have been reported. We report a 9 years old boy with eye enucleation and concurrent occurrence of retinoblastoma and astrocytoma in one eye as two separate and different masses. Although retinoblastoma and astrocytoma are two distinct tumors and their concurrent occurrence in one eye is rare, concurrent occurrence of these tumors may suggest differentiation of these two tumors from a neuroectodermal primary cell.

Purpose: To determine the anatomic and functional results of giant RETINAL tear (GRT) surgery by using perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCL) and silicone oil (SO) tamponade.Materials & Methods: 20 eyes of 20 patients with GRT have undergone classic three port pars plana deep vitrectomy by using PFCL & SO tamponade by the authors during 1996-1999 periods in Farabi Eye Hospital. Five cases were related to high myopia, three had a history of penetrating trauma, five cases had blunt trauma, and in one case GRT occurred after cataract extraction. All the patients were followed for 2 to 36 months after surgery.Results: Anatomic success rate was 80% after one operation & 95% at the end of the study. Redetachment rate was not related to GRT extension or history of trauma, rather it was related to preoperative PVR. Better visual function (visual acuity of 5.200 or better) was seen in 17 patients.Conclusion: Pars plana deep vitrectomy by using PFCL & SO tamponade has a promising result in curing the GRT. PVR is the main factor for redetachment.

More than 90% of the world population experience the infection by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), this virus has the potential to survive in B cells for the entire life period of infected individuals. However, if the balance between host and virus is disturbed, silent EBV infection could change to NEOPLASMS. Socioeconomic factors affect exposure to EBV so the age of primary infection varies worldwide. In underdeveloped population infection occurs at lower age and EBV infection remains subclinical in high number of patients. Different NEOPLASMS associated with EBV infection are EBV-positive Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), EBV-associated Burkitt lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD), smooth muscle tumor and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. This review article presents detail information about pathogenesis, clinical presentation and treatment of pediatric patients with these disorders.
